Above, a chart from A Text-Book of Mental Deficiency by A.F. and R.F. Tredgold, first published in 1908 and reprinted in eight editions, the last in 1952. It was the primary text in its field for too many years. Let us not assume that today’s science is less likely to be infected with fear and loathing.

They are shown here as rep­resented in scientific journals be-fore and after it was learned that goiter was caused by physical rather than mental factors.
